It’s about to get crazy in the NHL.

“Oh geez, it is crazy,” said one NHL general manager on Tuesday. The Stanley Cup has been awarded. The draft is less than a week away and teams still have to completely reshape their rosters. The problem, lamented the GM, is it’s hard to establish pricing right now. The traditional price paid, from a free agent to a trade, is out the window because teams are strapped. Budgets are kicking in.

And still. Everyone wants to get better.

“That jams everybody up for everything. You have to get creative,” said another GM on Tuesday afternoon. “You end up doing things you wouldn’t have thought. That’s what’s going on.”

That means players who we might not know are available, are available. One GM agreed that players who, in a normal year, might have real trade value, might be available just for another team’s willingness to take on the contract. But that…
