WWE Slammy Awards 2020: Roman Reigns Fails To Win; Edge, Drew McIntyre, And Sasha Banks Amongst The Winners

The year 2020 saw some extraordinary moments and some extraordinary performers. These incredible performances deserved an award, and WWE executed the perfect plan.

The return of the WWE Slammy Awards was a much needed nostalgia rush for fans who enjoyed the 2000s. Let’s check out who took home the statuettes at WWE’s equivalent to the Academy Awards.

The most important WWE Slammy Awards

WWE Champion Drew McIntyre picked up the award for Superstar of the Year. He also picked up the Male Superstar of the Year award.

This doesn’t really come as a surprise. McIntyre had a fabulous year, winning the Rumble match, winning the WWE Title at WrestleMania, holding it for over 200+ days, and ending the year with the championship in hand.

The Match of the Year was quite a divisive pick. Undertaker vs AJ Styles from WrestleMania 36 picked up the award.

A cinematic match winning the Slammy for Match of the Year is quite a controversial choice despite how entertaining it was. It won ahead of AJ Styles vs Daniel Bryan, Rhea Ripley vs Charlotte Flair, Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre and even Edge vs Randy Orton.

The Rivalry of the Year award went to Edge vs Randy Orton. No other rivalry came close to theirs. Orton’s heel game is so strong, it made Edge’s already celebrated return feel much more important.

Edge played the desperate babyface looking to stake his claim once again in WWE. He became the perfect foil for Orton which gave us this exceptional rivalry. Not to mention, the RKO to Beth Phoenix was beautiful.

SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks won the Female Superstar of the Year award. She somehow outperformed her former best friend, Bayley, who was actually a shoo-in for Superstar of the Year. Banks held every active female championship on the main roster. A Slammy win rounds off a near-perfect year for the Boss.

The secondary Slammys

Raw Tag Team Champions the Street Profits picked up the Tag Team of the Year and Breakout Star awards. Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins have had a stellar year. With teams like AOP and the Revival quitting WWE, the Street Profits really stepped up their game. Their win at Survivor Series over the New Day basically won them the Slammy.

No wrestling return in 2020 came even two percent close to Edge’s return at the Royal Rumble. The pop was so huge, it drowned out Edge’s Metalingus theme song. It was the obvious choice for Return of the Year. Also nominated in this section were Roman Reigns, Goldberg, Sami Zayn and MVP.

Undertaker picked up the Moment of the Year award. Taker’s Final Farewell retirement was not quite what fans expected when they imagine Undertaker’s retirement. However, the circumstances warranted the moment, and we’re glad that at long last Taker is resting in peace. Waiting for him to hang his hat was getting more and more annoying.

There were other several smaller and less significant awards. They are: Most Creative 24/7 Pin- Drew Gulak, Musical Performance of the Year- Elias, Trash talker of the Year- Lacey Evans and the Hurt Business, Social Media Superstar of the Year- Bayley, WWE Network Documentary of the Year- Undertaker: The Last Ride, Celebrity Appearance of the Year- Rob Gronkowski, Double Cross of the Year- Bayley betrays Sasha Banks, Referee of the Year- Charles Robinson.

The most shocking snub of the 2020 Slammy Awards was Roman Reigns. WWE’s Tribal Chief was nominated in almost every category but did not win a single one. Also empty handed were Becky Lynch, The Fiend, AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, Charlotte Flair and Braun Strowman.
